Notes about Discourse for the upcoming Forum
Using this post to write down some of the things we want to achieve with discourse. I started some initial restyling and getting familiar with Discourse's settings. https://zakros.discourse.group
1. Have a landing page for the forum
It seems Discourse does not have a native way to create a custom landing page beyond visual styling of the provided landing page. I did find a plug in for building landing pages into the Forum, so this might be an option: https://meta.discourse.org/t/landing-pages-plugin/180967?tl=en
The creators of this plugin, a discourse consultancy group, seem to be using the plugin for their own forum:
2. Customize Site Style and Header with Zakros logo and branding
Here's documentation for theming and styling: https://meta.discourse.org/t/beginners-guide-to-using-discourse-themes/91966?silent=true
Explore and Download Template themes: https://meta.discourse.org/c/customization/theme/61/none
Header should link back to Zakros main site, and perhaps OSS?
3. Inviting Museum Edition people into the Forum
It seems we can grab the csv lists from Museum Edition and Citizen Historians and send them invitations to the forum. Here is some documentation about this: https://meta.discourse.org/t/sending-bulk-user-invites/16468?tl=en
4. General Notes
We talked about having two public categories and perhaps one private one: Welcome to Museum Edition, Continuing the Discussion from the last event, and a private team category for us.
The goal would be for the Forum to feel very integrated with the rest of the Zakros site, just like the epic/ Unreal Engine 5 Forums. https://forums.unrealengine.com/categories?tag=unreal-engine
We talked about a single sign on system so users only sign up once to become members in the entire zakros ecosystem.
